Dear Rep. John Carter:

I implore you to insist that an independent investigation is launched into
the massive failures - both federal and local - that occurred in the
aftermath of hurricane Katrina. President Bush's pledge to launch his own
investigation, while I'm sure it is rooted in the best intentions, is not
in the interest of the American people. Our nation's future hinges on the
ability of the Federal government to respond to a terrorist, accidental,
or natural disaster. We must be able to depend on those in charge of
protecting our safety to respond appropriately. Do not fail the American
people simply to tow a party line.
